"Why the hell did they have to investigate?" Back in Jeepers Creeper, after a short discussion as to what they've just seen, the two decide to go back and investigate. I'm hiding behind my hands, viewing the action via one almost-closed eye, as if this would make the on screen action any less terrifying. The first kid has just been carved up by Leatherface. This time it's stationary, the previously unseen occupant dumping what looks suspiciously like bodies into a large pipe at the back of a deserted church.
Around an hour later they see the van again. They have a rather nasty 'Duel' style encounter with a rusty old van, which practically attempts to force them off the road.
Teenagers, this time numbering two siblings, driving home for summer break. Sun blanched grass, dusty one lane highways. A lonely road, somewhere in the American midwest. "What is it?" "Texas Chainsaw Massacre." The opening half an hour of Jeepers Creepers pays homage to the above film. He rushes to his brother's bedroom and returns within five minutes with a battered VHS. At a friend's house for a sleepover - his parents are out for the night - we decide to watch a film.

My rating of 6 is purely for the first half of a movie which could have been so much more! Ultimately disappointing, even more so as the film begins so promisingly, but ends so ridiculously. No explanation is even offered as to where this being has come from and with the "psychic character" knowing everything else about him, why couldn't she at least have served a purpose by enlightening us? All other movie "bogeymen" in the past have had at least some kind of history with the hero/heroine eventually finding some method of disposing of the killer even if only until the sequel. the killer running over the top of the car as the kids try to run him down and climbing sideways along the wall of the police station. It fails to scare or convince and most of the events and special effects sequences seem to have little point other than to prove they can be done i.e. Very sadly though, once the killer becomes clearly visible and the two leads go on the run the writer/director Victor Salva either seems to have run out of ideas or has just lost interest in his movie. (The audience I saw it with jumped out of their seats collectively twice during the lead characters' investigation of the pipe and church basement). However, as the film began, I started to think that this movie may well prove an exception to the recent rule with the first half hour to 45 minutes cranking up the tension and delivering some genuine and well timed shocks. I went to see Jeepers Creepers with little expectation, especially considering the usual tag line of "the scariest movie to come out of the US for 10 years" etc.

Great to hear a soundtrack free from modern US radio rock and I liked the use of the song as the end credits rolled, different and witty. I even thought the use of the titular song turned out to be a neat little idea rather than the contrived plot device it could so easily have been. Aside from this Jeepers Creepers is a good scary movie and I loved the ending, almost daring for a Hollywood picture these days. It becomes far less frightening and a little predictable, worst offence here being the character of the (groan) psychic woman. All that said, the film works least well when things descend into more traditional monster movie fare. The two lead actors' performances are solid and believable throughout and thankfully never veer towards the 'hysterical screaming' school of acting. There's a real sense of backwoods America during these early scenes which lend the proceedings a genuinely creepy ambience. The figure appearing as neither man nor beast and engaging the two sibling protagonists by way of two Duel-style chases in his scary truck from hell. JC works best during the first hour when we are offered fleeting glimpses of the 'Creeper' and his handiwork. A much needed shot in the arm to a genre that was getting too self-referential, too clever for its own good and too damn unscary! Jeepers Creepers is none of the above and although it fades towards the end, it certainly manages to provide some genuinely unsettling moments along the ride.
